Dii - Desert Energy

Netzwerke in Forschung, Technologie und Innovation Politikberatung

Launched in 2009 as an industry initiative in Germany (initially called ‘Desertec Industrial Initiative’) for exploring the potential of renewables in the desert areas of Northern Africa and the Middle East, improving market conditions and examining the synergies to be captured through connecting the European and MENA power markets.

The organization has a global outreach by shareholders from Europe (innogy), Middle East (ACWA Power) & Asia (State Grid Corporation of China) as well as associated partners with business all over the globe.

Its unique Network of networks includes cooperation with industry associations like Solarpower Europe, BEE, Ghorfa, MESIA, CEBC, political organizations, like the Arab League, RCREEE, GCF, European Commission and national ministries, GIZ, development banks, Research institutes (e.g. Max Planck or Fraunhofer) NGOs and the different divisions of the United Nations.

Its mission is to support an increased and rapid deployment of utility-scale renewable energy projects in MENAT desert areas and integrate them in the interconnected power systems for greater local and regional benefits.

Its strategy is to focus on practical country specific issues in the MENAT region that impact the execution of renewable projects and enable joint efforts to provide strategic market improving guidance and support.
