Standards New Zealand is the national Standards body and the operating arm of the Standards Council. The Standards Council is an autonomous Crown entity operating under the Standards Act 1988.

Standards New Zealand is responsible for managing the development and distribution of Standards across a range of sectors. Standards New Zealand is a self-funded, not-for-profit organisation, relying on revenue primarily from contracts with sponsors to develop Standards, but also from sales of Standards' publications.

The autonomous way in which Standards New Zealand operates and its self-funded status helps maintain an independent stance which, in turn, facilitates a cross section of industry and stakeholder buy-in to Standards development.

The majority of Standards are developed in partnership with Standards Australia. As New Zealand's representative for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Standards New Zealand ensures that New Zealand has a voice in the international Standards community.
