The programme enables established or leading researchers from Germany or abroad to spend time in Berlin and jointly develop, pilot, or implement a research project together with a host institution. In addition to individual research stays, the programme can provide funding to establish a new research group in Berlin.
Funding is offered in three tracks, depending on the maturity of the planned project:
- Track A – Project development: Funding of the Visiting Fellow for 1–3 years (up to €50,000 per year).
- Track B – Pilot phase: Funding of the Visiting Fellow (up to €50,000 per year) and a small research group (up to €100,000 per year) for 1–3 years each.
- Track C – Project implementation: Funding of the Visiting Fellow (up to €50,000 per year for up to 2 years) and a research group (up to €150,000 per year for up to 3 years).
Applications must be submitted by the host institution in Berlin (Charité, BIH, DHZC, or MDC) on behalf of the nominated Visiting Fellow. The host institution provides the workplace and administrative support, while Stiftung Charité grants funds as a lump sum to the host. Visiting Fellows are expected to visit Berlin several times a year for extended research stays.
The aim of the programme is to strengthen the diversity, internationalisation, and competitiveness of Berlin’s life sciences ecosystem and to prepare successful applications for major third-party funding.
An online information session will be held on 10 December 2025. The application deadline is 9 February 2026. Funding decisions are expected by the end of May 2026, with projects starting from June 2026.
