Scientists, universities, research institutions, companies with research facilities and scientific foundations can nominate projects by women from science and business for the Women Breakthrough Award.
The Women Breakthrough Award is presented in three categories:
- The "Innovation" category recognises the researcher who addresses a gender-specific issue in her research in an innovative way.
- The category "Gender Mainstreaming" honours female researchers who incorporate gender equality into the design of their research project.
- The third category, "Empowerment", recognises the researcher who empowers women or other underrepresented persons through her research.
Each award comes with 3000 EUR prize money.
The nomination is open to women working in academia and business on research related to one of the themes of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Nominees should be at an advanced stage of PhD, postdoctoral or similar level, or hold a junior professorship or similar position.
The jury, consisting of established female scientists from various disciplines as well as selected members of the Elsevier Foundation and the Falling Walls Foundation will evaluate all submissions and applications. The 3 winners will be publicly announced in late September and invited to present their work at an awards ceremony and gala dinner on 07 November 2023 as part of the Falling Walls Science Summit.
The Women Breakthrough Award runs independently from the Falling Walls Global Call.
