Power Markets in Turmoil: Ways out of the Crises

Duration: 25.04.2023 City: online

From the drop of electricity prices related to the Covid pandemic in 2020 to the price peaks following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and low production capacities last summer, the dynamics on Europe’s power markets have been characterised by unparalleled volatility. These developments have highlighted the central role of energy issues for large parts of the European economy and population. Therefore, the topic was not only discussed by energy experts, but also at the highest political level.

In response, various EU member states, including France and Germany, have taken various short-term measures to contain the consequences of the price spikes and have expressed different preferences for the long-term reform of the European electricity market. In mid-March, the EU published its proposals on the matter, which are now being discussed by the European Parliament and the member states.

To enable an understanding and contextualisation of these processes, the webinar will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of long-term and short-term power markets' structures and operations, as well as the significance of the spot market in France and Germany concerning traded volumes. The conversation will then shift to the current crises and their effects on power markets, followed by proposals from the EU Commission, France, and Germany on how to tackle these challenges.

In its quest to provide energy transition stakeholders with critical insights, the Franco-German Office for the Energy Transition is proud to bring you Nord Pool’s insights into this subject.
