Chinese Award for Eduard Arzt

The Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) honors INM Scientific Director Eduard Arzt with the Lee Hsun Lecture Award.

Logo INMINM Scientific Director Eduard Arzt was recently honored for his "significant contributions to the materials sciences". The award is made by the renowned Institute of Metal Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science. When visiting the Chinese city of Shenyang, he received the Lee Hsun Lecture Award. The award was presented to him at his lecture on scale effects in materials and structures. Materials scientist Eduard Arzt has been Scientific Director and Chairman at INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrucken and holds the Chair for New Materials at Saarland University. He is listed as one of the most cited materials scientists worldwide.

Background:

The award has been given since 2002 and is named after Professor Lee Hsun, who was the director of the Institute of Metal Research from 1951 to 1983. Prof. Lee is known for his discovery of hydrogen embrittlement in steel in the 1940s and was later Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Today, the Institute is directed by Prof. Ke Lu, who is internationally well known for introducing the concept of nanotwins into advanced alloys. He is also a member of the German Academy Leopoldina. During his visit, Prof. Arzt initiated new contacts for future collaborations with INM on basic and applied materials problems.
