In December 2009, the international community failed to draft a Kyoto follow-up protocol. It is not without irony that these large-scale events designed to save the climate produce large CO2 emissions due to travel and air-conditioned accom-modation of thousands of delegates. Even though, or simply because of the limited success of the Copenhagen summit, climate change continues to be a relevant topic on the global agenda. Hamburg University of Applied Sciences organizes for the third time after 2008 and 2009 the worldwide scientific online climate conference CLIMATE 2010 - guaranteed climate-friendly as not travels are needed to participate and the website is powered by green energy. From 1-7 November 2010, reseachers, companies, authorities, students and the interested public can discuss the impacts of climate change at http://www.climate2010.net.
"IT can facilitate spreading worldwide climate know-how and help connecting stake-holders from many different disciplines" says Professor Walter Leal, CLIMATE 2010's chairman. "Especially in the developing countries which are believed to be most affect-ted by climate change, there is a large demand for access to climate know-how to adapt to future climatic impacts." The key theme of the virtual conference is "Climate change and the Sustainable Management of Water Resources". Renowned partners are the UN Environment Program (UNEP), the Interdisciplinary Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and further world bodies.
Researchers from around the globe, but also authorities, NGOs, companies and the interested public are encouraged to submit a scientific abstract until 31 March 2010 online at www.climate2010.net, relating to one of the four following categories:
- Category 1: Geochemical and physical impacts of climate change
- Category 2: Socio-economic aspects of Climate Change (relating to water supply and use)
- Category 3: Climate Change, policy-making and sustainable water use
- Category 4: Projects on Climate Change and sustainable water use, in particular education and awareness-raising initiatives
All submissions will be subject to peer review. Besides online publication throughout the conference week from 1-7 November 2010, the best English papers will be considered for publication in the "International Journal of Climate Change Studies and Management" and/or the book publication "Climate Change and the Sustainable Management of Water Resources" as part of the Climate Change Management Series (Springer). Further, there is an opportunity to promote own climate-related projects and publications.
The organizers aim to exceed the previous successful conferences: In 2009, thousands of conference participants from 147 countries discussed a total of 103 papers on the social, economic and political aspects of climate change. The CLIMATE 2009 website recorded almost 4 million hits and 830,000 site visits.
In 2010, participants will again have the opportunity to discuss all contributions directly with the authors. In addition, CLIMATE 2010 features regular expert live chats, climate videos and many new features such as climate teaching materials. Like in the previous year, CLIMATE 2010 will provide exciting discussions: Last year, for example, researcher from the Asian Institute of Technology evaluated awareness-raising adaptation in Bangladesh, a researcher from Singapore University elaborated on a global framework for ICT and Dutch scientists described opportunities and challenges of climate change for regional planning.

The organizers
The Research and Transfer Centre Applications of Life Sciences (abbreviation: FTZ-ALS) of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg) was established in August 2007. Headed by Professor Walter Leal, the centre offers local, national and international project-related approaches to solving problems primarily in the field of Life Sciences (incl. biotechnology, medical engineering, pharmacology and environmental protection technology) as well as superordinate topics such as energy, climate protection and sustainability.
