Elsevier Report "Germany as a Science Nation"

The new Elsevier study "Germany as a Science Nation" evaluates the strengths and capabilities of the German research sector while also examining Germany’s status in an international context. It offers insights into the the nation’s research landscape, identifies key strengths and analyzes the influence of its scientific output on innovation and policymaking.

The publication considers Germany to be a vital player in the global scientific community, marked by academic excellence and a diverse, well-integrated research ecosystem. The complementarity between universities and non-university research organizations forms a core strength of the national science system. Another notable outcome highlighted in the report is Germany's strong global standing in university rankings, as the highest-ranked non-English speaking country.

Germany has also solidified its position within the European research landscape. Following Brexit, it became the country with the highest number of European Research Council (ERC)-funded publications. Another defining feature of Germany’s science system is its close collaboration between academia and industry. The country ranks among the highest globally for academic-industry co-publications.

Despite these strengths, the report identifies areas for improvement – particularly in translating academic research into industrial application in strategic fields such as artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.
