European Economic and Social Committee Visits Forschungszentrum Jülich

Advisory committee of the European Union obtains picture of ongoing research in Jülich

The European Economic and Social Committee paid a visit to Forschungszentrum Jülich today to gain a picture of research in progress there. The members of the Committee, which advises the Commission, the Council and the Parliament of the EU, were welcomed by Prof. Achim Bachem, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and then took the opportunity to visit various institutes at Jülich. The programme included the topics of supercomputing, electron microscopy, brain research, nanoelectronics and sustainable energy generation.

The European Economic and Social Committee is an institution that advises the European Union. It drafts comments on European legislation and other relevant topics. One of the Committee’s tasks is to build a “bridge" between the European institutions and so-called organized civil society and to establish a "structured dialogue".

Forschungszentrum Jülich pursues cutting-edge interdisciplinary research on solving the grand challenges facing society in the fields of health, energy and the environment, and also information technologies. In combination with its two key competencies – physics and supercomputing – work at Jülich focuses on both long-term, fundamental and multidisciplinary contributions to science and technology as well as on specific technological applications. With a staff of about 4400, Jülich – a member of the Helmholtz Association – is one of the largest research centres in Europe.
