Plasma based technological innovation for environment protection in BSR

New possibilities - PlasTEP: The new anti-pollution project is under way

"Plasma for environment protection" - this is the new slogan of 15 partners from the Baltic Sea Region (BSR).

Over recent years, public opinion has focused on the issue of environment protection since progressive degradation of environment, resulting from increased generation of pollutants and wastes is the price for the rapid developement of human civilisation of the 20th century.

Pollution controll to protect the environment is now a reqirement for all countries and a strategic aim of the European Union. This is reflected in the increasing tightening of the exhaust emission standards, particulary in the Baltic Sea Region countries.

A new plasma-based ant pollution project started on the 1st of January 2010. The Technology Centre of Western Pomerania (TZV) is lead partner in this project.

The project aim of PlasTEP: "Dissemination and fostering of plasma based technological innovation for environment protection in BSR" is to send clear information to decision makers in politics and economics about the potential which exists for pollution reduction. It focuses on establishing a sustained network structure and is aimed at converting the knowledge of research institutions into market applications. A pristine nature environment represents an important resource for commercial opportunities, particulary in the BSR countries, therfore industrialisation has to be increasingly environmental-friendly. New possibilities for this will be fostered by innovative plasma-based exhaust gas and water treatment techniques.

In order to stimulate the necessary investment for such environmental challenges, 3 thematic working groups will be developed in the context of PlasTEP. Mobile and partially mobile demonstration models and prototypes for pollution reduction will be constructed. The 1st working group is focusing on the pollutants nitrogen and sulphur oxides (NOx/SOx) and how they occur, primarily during all burning processes. The 2nd working group concentrates on harmful volatile organic compounds (VOC) and particles in e.g. polymer processing, paint shops etc. The 3rd working group is dealing with the treatment of polluted water.

A sustainability analysis of plasma-based environment protection solutions will be made - with the assistence of all partners - with respect to environmental performance and the potential for integration of research and marketing.

Resulting from this, common support strategies for industrial implementation will be developed and disseminated. SMEs as users and manufacturers, public authorities as specifiers and purchasers and other organisations which have multiple needs will all play substantial role.

In addition, to facilitate the transition from research to industrial use, PlasTEP will organise meetings with potential investors  who are interested in implementing the anti-pollution solutions which the project develop.
