Supporting young scientists from the US and Germany is the focus of a new initiative launched by RWTH Aachen University, Forschungszentrum Juelich and the University of Pennsylvania, funded by German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology’s ERP program. Between June 12-16, 2011, the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science will host the first interdisciplinary JARA “Young Researchers Transatlantic Academy”, focusing on transferable skills for doctoral students doing research related to the topic “brain”.

The five-day academy offers participants a special opportunity to meet experts in their field of research from Germany and the US and to interact with other PhD students. Applications are encouraged from PhD candidates from RWTH Aachen University, Forschungszentrum Juelich, the University of Pennsylvania as well as other German and US institutions whose work somehow relates to the brain, including matters of neuroscience and neurological illness, medical imaging, perception, vision, information processing, and implications for machine learning.

The Academy aims to strengthen participants' global skills, improve their chances for funding and executing German-American research collaboration, and foster intercultural awareness. The challenging academic and professional development program has a capacity of 30, allowing 15 students from the US and 15 from Germany to attend.

Participants are drawn from RWTH Aachen University, Forschungszentrum Jülich, University of Pennsylvania, and additional selected research universities in the US. The conference fee for the Academy will be entirely sponsored by RWTH Aachen University, including full board for all days of the academy. For participants from outside the University of Pennsylvania, accommodation will be provided in shared dormitory rooms. Participants are generally responsible for funding and making arrangements for their own transportation to Philadelphia. Applicants from RWTH and Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany may apply for a travel subsidy of 200 Euros to offset international travel costs.
