The launching of the first three Pan African University campuses

During the opening session of the 17th ordinary session of the African Union end of June in Equatorial Guinea, Mr. Jean Ping, President of the African Union Commission announced the launching, in September 2011, of the first three Pan African University campuses, project in which UNESCO is associated since its conception.

The Pan African University (Assembly/AU/Dec.290) aims at meeting the need for Higher Education to become fully competitive at the international level and is composed of five selected institutes for Higher Education, in the following thematic areas, to be located in the five regions of Africa :

  • Space Sciences – Southern Africa;
  • Water and Energy including climate change – Northern Africa;
  • Basic Science, Technology and Innovation – Eastern Africa, Kenya;
  • Earth and Life Sciences – Western Africa, Nigeria
  • Governance, humanities and social Sciences -  Central Africa, Cameroon
