Zeitraum: 01.07.2021 Ort: online

Data collection and international exchange remain critical to contain the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide. In addition to case numbers, reproduction rates, and modeling, topics such as sensitivity and specificity of tests and vaccine efficacy have dominated public debate in recent months. Experts will discuss the importance of data in the current pandemic and how it can help to increase preparedness for international health emergencies in the future at this international virtual panel discussion organized by the Leopoldina that will take place on Thursday, 1 July 2021, online via Zoom.

What are the benefits and limits of data in informing public health responses? By answering these questions, the experts will take into account previous international experiences in collecting, comparing and understanding pandemic data. Debating at the podium are:

  • Simon Cauchemez, PhD, Head of the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases Unit, Institut Pasteur, Paris/France
  • Professor Christopher Dye, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology, University of Oxford/UK, former Director of Strategy of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Fellow of the Royal Society/UK
  • Professor Dr. Gerd Gigerenzer, Director of the Harding Center for Risk Literacy, University of Potsdam, Director Emeritus of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin/Germany and Member of the Leopoldina
  • Professor Alessia Melegaro, PhD, Associate Professor of Demography, Director of the Covid Crisis Lab, Bocconi University, Milan/Italy, Member of the Italian Health Ministry’s Technical and Scientific Committee on COVID-19

The event is open to all interested parties and will be held in English. Participation is free of charge. Prior registration is required and possible here.

With this event, the Leopoldina continues its Leopoldina International Virtual Panel Series. The objective of the virtual panel discussions, organized in cooperation with the Leopoldina's international partners, is to offer a virtual room for the global scientific community to convene and for the interested public to join the dialogue with scientists.
