The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (Indonesian: Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia or LIPI) was set up in 1967 as the result of a merger of two predecessors. LIPI’s role is to carry out government duties in the field of scientific research (including standardisation and quality assessment). LIPI consists of 47 centers that perform research in the following areas:

1. Biodiversity, Environment and Maritime

2. Food Security, Agriculture and Husbandry

3. Health and Pharmaceuticals

4. Advanced Materials

5. Energy and Transportation

6. Information and Communication as well as Defense and Security

7. Social Dynamics, Humanity and Culture and

8. Innovation of Technology and Science Application.
