Workshop on Socio-economically Sustainable Urban Development

On behalf of the International Bureau of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, the University of Cologne, the Leibnitz University of Hannover, InWEnt Capacity Building Germany and the National Economics University of Ha Noi are pleased to issue this Invitational Workshop Announcement and Call for Papers.

Accepted authors will be invited to join a workshop from Dec. 1 through 3 held at the National Economics University in Hanoi, Vietnam. Travel expenses and daily allowances are included in the award.

Vietnamese cities with a population more than 1 million inhabitants (i.e. Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Noi, and Hai Phong) must respond to the challenges of significant socio-economic dynamics, especially on issues of growth, migration, fragmentation, polarization, resource scarcity, infrastructure bottlenecks and housing supply.

To maintain the operability of growth poles, integrated planning- and development projects, investments, and participation of various stakeholders are necessary. We are interested in papers on VietNam that address the following four topics and themes:

  1. (Mega)cities as risk areas of global change on the grounds of socio-economic fragmentation and disparities.
  2. Socio-economic vulnerability in respect to the number of people, political centers, economic networks, public utilities and socio-cultural conflicts.
  3. Social coherence within (mega)cities.
  4. City-connectivity, inter-city economic relationships, and knowledge management between cities.
