CORNET stands for Collective Research NETworking, a network of funding organisations. CORNET helps to increase the competitiveness of SMEs by funding international pre-competitive Collective Research projects.
Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are often confronted with challenges including new security or environmental norms, new materials, or the need to innovate their production processes. However, most SMEs lack the financial and personnel resources to perform research activities that would be necessary to tackle these issues.
Collective Research offers the solution: Several enterprises of a branch with a common pre-competitive problem join forces. They receive funding for assigning a research organisation with solving their problem. After the completion of such a research project the results are widely distributed. Collective Research follows a bottom-up approach: any topic that supports SMEs in their innovation efforts is welcome.
CORNET combines existing funding schemes for Collective Research in Europe and beyond and supports new funding organisations worldwide to introduce pilot actions and schemes for pre-competitive Collective Research.
The CORNET coordination activities are financially supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). Previously supported within the Sixth and Seventh Research Framework Programme of the European Commission as an ERA-Net, the CORNET initiative successfully evolved into an independent self-sustaining network.
