The Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Akademia Nauk - PAN, deutsch Polnische Akademie der Wissenschaften) is a state scientific institution founded in Warsaw  in 1952. The Academy is an elected body of scholars, including national members and also foreign members. The number of national members is limited to 350. The overseeing institution is the Prime Minister of Poland.

The Agency is tasked with

  • pursuing advanced researchs in its scientific units, of strategic importance for the development of science and the economy;
  • supporting various forms of international research cooperation
  • educating young scholars in graduate and post-graduate programs and
  • formulating opinions and producing expert studies on science and policy issues of fundamental importance.

69 research institutes are organized under five divisions which focus on

  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Biological and Agricultural Sciences
  • Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences
  • Technical Sciences
  • Medical Sciences.
