The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Landmark Monitoring 2022–2024 summarizes the first pilot round of ESFRI Landmark Monitoring. It contains both an overview on the monitoring itself as well as the preparatory steps for establishing the procedures with references to published documents. The report ends with reflections from the Lessons Learnt exercise. It is a retrospective view and, thus, does not contain the planning of future batches of Landmark Monitoring, which will be presented separately.
The monitoring aimed to support the continued development of ESFRI Landmarks and provide insights into the performance, sustainability, and impact of Research Infrastructures across Europe. Overall, the process confirmed the scientific excellence and strategic relevance of the Landmarks, while identifying areas for further improvement, particularly in Key Performance Indicator (KPI) frameworks and long-term funding stability. A step-by-step monitoring manual is also under development to streamline future efforts.
